A hand-drawn Affix Tree poster. The green and red crown shows prefixes, letters added to the beginning of a root or base word to change the meaning (re-, again), and suffixes, letters added to the end (-est, the most). The trunk is the base word, a group of letters with sounds and meaning by itself (jump). The roots are the root, a group of letters with sounds and meaning that must be attached to a prefix, suffix or base word (-ology, science).

A Selkirk College flyer for Orton-Gillingham Literacy Instructor Certificate Training in Nelson, July 6 to 17, 2026, Monday to Friday 9 AM to 4 PM, at the Silver King Campus, $1,199 plus GST, instructor Erin Bauman. It teaches a unique approach to reading and writing for all educators, including teachers, childcare workers, educational assistants, volunteers and family members. The approach was designed by a neurologist and a linguist, uses a trauma-informed perspective and multi-sensory tools, and works in a classroom or one-to-one tutoring. Levels can be taken on their own, or all three for certification. A community education bursary can help with the cost. To register, visit selkirk.ca, call 250.354.3220, or email nelsoncastlegarce@selkirk.ca.
