The short version
The Kootenay List, operated by Kootenay Made Digital of Castlegar BC, keeps a public register of businesses. We hold business information that is already public, plus whatever you send us if you claim a listing or send one in. There is no mailing list. We do not run tracking ads, ever, and we do not sell your data. Any business can ask to be removed and it will be.
What we collect
For each business we hold public information such as name, town, category, website, and, where it is corporate-public, phone and address. Each entry keeps a record of the source it came from. When you claim a listing or write to us, we collect what you choose to send: your name, your role, your email, and anything you write.
How the forms work
The forms on this site do not send anything to a server of ours. They compose an email in your own mail app, addressed to us, with what you typed. Until you press send in your own email, nothing has left your device, and when you do, it arrives in our inbox like any other email. We keep that correspondence only as long as it takes to act on it.
Cookies and what stays on your device
The site sets no cookies and runs no trackers. It keeps one small list in your browser's own storage: the entries you recently viewed, so the site can show them back to you. That list never leaves your device, and clearing your browser data clears it.
Hosting
The site is served by Vercel, our hosting provider. Like nearly every host, Vercel keeps standard technical logs of requests, which include IP addresses, to run and protect the service. We do not use those logs to identify visitors.
Person-named businesses
Some businesses are named after the person who runs them. British Columbia's Personal Information Protection Act governs how a BC organisation like ours handles that, and we go further than it requires. For a person-named business we publish only what the business has published about itself on its own website. A number they print on their own homepage, we show. A phone number or street address we could only find in a licence roll, a health inspection or a professional register, we do not, because being listed in a register you are required by law to join is not the same as choosing to be in a directory, and that address is very often a home.
How we use it
Public business information is used to keep the register accurate and useful. Claim-form details are used only to verify that a business is yours and to reply to you. There is no newsletter and no mailing list, so your email is never used to send you anything you did not directly ask for.
Tracking and analytics
No tracking ads, ever. We do not sell or share your personal information. If we ever measure how the site is used, it is only in aggregate page counts that do not identify you, and never for advertising.
Removal, correction, and contact
Any business can ask to have its listing corrected or removed entirely, and we will do it. This is a promise, not a process to fight through. Write to hello@kootenaylist.ca with the business name and town. You can also read how the List works and the terms.
